Warehouse Operations Manager – CT (Retained)

THE COMPANY

Burris Logistics is a family-owned business specializing in Custom Retail Distribution, Foodservice Redistribution, Refrigerated Warehousing and Transportation Solutions. As one of the nation’s largest and most sophisticated controlled-temperature bard distribution companies, Burris Logistics offers over 60 million cubic feet of freezer warehousing space in 15 strategic locations along the East Coast. Each warehouse is capable of developing custom storage and transportation programs, uniquely designed to meet individual customer needs. The facility in Rocky Hill, CT is the companies newest and opened in August 2008.

THE POSITION

Reporting to the General Manager, this position will direct the efficient and cost effective operation of warehousing activities, while maintaining a safe and clean work environment. Oversees budgeting process, departmental planning, and development of team members. Position requires strong relationship building, listening and communication skills. The management team at this four-year old facility is continuously in process of building, training and mentoring the workforce. Therefore a passion for talent development is a requirement for the Operations Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Manage daily operation efficiently with a focus on collaboration and long term   planning and execution.

· Coordinate all health, safety, sanitation and training programs for all warehouse supervisors and employees in order to stay in compliance with OSHA and industry standards.

· Maintain accurate inventory control procedures.

· Develop budget and operate within budget by controlling expenses and labor

· Ensures adherence to safety, security, housekeeping, and sanitation to maintain compliance to all local, state, and industry regulations.

·Achieves financial objectives by preparing annual budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating action plans to address variances.

· Schedule shifts productively with the intent of avoiding overtime.

· Must be able to interact courteously and tactfully with managers, coworkers, customers, and/or vendors to the point that productivity and morale are positively affective.

· Consistently maintain and promote Burris cultural values, goals and initiatives.

REQUIREMENTS

  • B.S. Degree, preferable in Business or Operations Management.
  • Prior experience with WMS and ELS.
  • Seven to ten years experience in a Leadership Role
  • Held positions within an organization that utilized metric Scorecards/Dashboards to benchmark performance.
  • A proven reputation for developing leaders within his/her Operations team
  • Developed a reputation for being results driven with the discipline focused on continuous improvement and customer service.

Senior Vice President Operations – TX

THE COMPANY
Grocers Supply was founded by Joe Levit in 1923. Max Levit, Joe’s son continues to promote the tradition of high integrity and customer service as acting President. This Houston-based privately held wholesale distributor has a major regional bartprint serving nearly 2,000 independent customers such as retail convenience stores, retail grocery stores, and institutional sectors. To serve those diverse customers, the company operates multiple distribution facilities (10) and it’s own fleet of several hundred tractors and trailers. Grocers Supply has had a non-union workforce for approximately 15 years and employs about 2,300 employees.

Today the organization generates about $3 billion in sales across all divisions of the company. Approximately $2 billion of that total is generated from the wholesale side of the business. In 2008 the company acquired nearly 40 grocery markets from Minyard Food Stores. The deal included the 23-unit Carnival Food Stores chain, most of which were converted to Fiesta Mart locations. In 2010 Grocers Supply joined private-label cooperative Topco Associates. Topco supplies it with dairy and bakery goods, health and beauty aids, general merchandise, pharmacy, fresh and processed meat, produce and floral.

The company is currently undergoing a positive transformation to become more process oriented, efficient and value added for their growing customer base. The addition of multiple senior executives from top companies across the industry has created momentum and excitement at Grocers Supply and their vendors. THE POSITION
Plans, organizes, directs and controls the activities of Distribution Operations at Grocers Supply. Accountable for the performance of Warehouse Operations, Transportation, Safety, Logistics/Traffic, Garage Maintenance, Facilities Maintenance and Security.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Reviews and approves adequate plans for the control of planned outputs, budget spending, labor efficiency, material efficiency, customer service, and order entry efficiency.
• Reviews performance against operating plans and standards. Provides reports to staff on interpretation of results and approves recommended changes in direction of plans.
• Communicates performance of department to Chief Operating Officer and proactively informs COO of potential operational issues that could result in impact to service levels or other customer service areas.
• Defines and recommends objectives in each area of Operations ensuring proper alignment with other departments such as Buying, Selling, Accounting/Finance, MIS, Purchasing, Human Resources, and Freedman, Grocers Produce, etc.
• Coordinates and collaborates with other departments in establishing and carrying out responsibilities.
• Develops specific short-term and long-term plans and programs, together with supporting budget requests and financial estimates.
• Reviews and approves cost control reports, cost estimates, and manpower and facilities requirements forecasts.
• Works with Accounting/Finance to develop the budget/financial operations plan for the entire Operations Department.
• Reviews, approves and monitors operations major projects.
• Develops plans for new areas of technology for the functions within Operations.
• Establishes objectives for managing performance within the Operations department. Ensures objectives are properly aligned with Company and departmental priorities.
• Ensures that duties, responsibilities, authority and accountability of all direct reports are defined and understood.
• Role models best management/leadership practices to ensure the development of an engaged workforce and the ability to remain free of third party representation.
• Leads the effort to ensure a Safe Workplace for all employees.
• Ensures compliance with company policies and all applicable laws and regulations such as DOT, OSHA, FDA, EEO, etc.
• Participates in various Executive Committees and weekly family business meetings.

REQUIREMENTS
• 20 years experience in operations, holding progressively more responsible positions (size and complexity) throughout his/her career.
• Developed a high level of expertise in leading complex transportation, warehouse, and traffic/logistics functions.
• Worked in an environment that utilized state of the art technology systems to support operations.
• Has had the opportunity to be a key player in identifying system needs, selecting vendors/solutions, and implementing new systems.
• Held positions at the VP level in “A” type companies.
• Worked in both, union and non-union, organizations and will have participated in at least one union organizing campaign.
• Held positions within an organization that utilized metric Scorecards/Dashboards to benchmark performance.
• Experience in applying ROI measurements to proposed initiatives.
• Experience as a change leader in previous roles
• A proven reputation for developing leaders within his/her Operations team
• Developed a reputation for being results driven with the discipline focused on continuous improvement

REPORTING TO:
The Senior VP of Operations will report to the Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, Mr. David D’Arezzo. Dave was named COO of Grocers Supply in May of 2008. Previously he served as Interim Chief Executive Officer, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for retail drugstore company Duane Reade. Dave has more than 20 years of merchandising, brand management, and operating expertise with companies such as Raley’s, Office Depot, Wegmans Food Markets and Pepsi-Cola.
